Lebala camp

Intoduction

http://www.kwando.com/ Kwando safaris

We just completed our honeymoon and were anxious to relate our experiences to our friends and family, particularly with respect to our experience at Lebala Camp, in the Okavango Delta.
As background, we had planned our honeymoon looking for the highest in luxury and the best safari experience. As we soon found out, the two are not the same. While we enjoyed, for instance, our stay at Khwai River Lodge, an Orient Express hotel, it paled in comparisson to our stay at Lebala.
Lebala is accessible chiefly by air, via a small airstrip 7 km from the lodge. The lodge itself is comprised of a main camp and eight sleeping tents, framed and floored for luxury. The management is terrific, which is the key to anyone's experience. Note that the charm of the camp is principally the fact that the camp is off the grid and is lit with oil lamps at night and is on a several thousand acre private concession. The private concession is the key. Safaris in national parks are rife with other vehicles that encircle the animals and spoil the experiences of game viewing. The privacy at this camp avoids this issue.
Lebala is also very intimate, with only 15 guests maximum at a time.
Run by Kwando Safaris, the camps are clean, the food is terrific and the experience superb. The photos on Kwando's website do not do the experience justice. Of all the places we stayed at (nearly 6), this place was the best.

sn't it just fabulous!!!! We were there on the 9/10 and 11 of August for my big birthday and boy did they make it special. Trouble is we don't want to go anywhere else now! It really is superbly run by Monique and Harry and the rest of the crew. Just couldn't fault any of it...food, fab accommodation (we had the honeymoon tent...number 8?). Did you by any chance see any wild dogs? That was the only thing that we didn't see but heck we need an excuse to go back! Trouble is, if we sing the praise of it too much everyone else will want to go there!

Lebala means wide open spaces in Setswana and the scenery is dominated by vast plains with scattered palms and tree clumps backed by wooded savannas.

This wild expanse is contrasted with the casual elegance and luxury of the camp itself. Lebala Camp is situated 30 kilometers to the south of Lagoon Camp and fronts onto the Linyanti Wetlands.

Open grasslands scattered with Illala Palms stretch to the south and west of Lebala. The perennial and southerly flowing Kwando river disappears into the vast marshes before emerging as the Linyanti river, flowing in a north easterly direction. The triangle formed in Namibia by this direction change is home to the Mamili National Park.

The eight spacious tents are unique and were designed by us specifically for this camp. Each one is built on a raised teak deck, laid out with maximum comfort and privacy in mind. The tents have an entrance foyer with a reading and writing area, en-suite bathrooms with Victorian clawfoot bathtubs, "his and hers" washbasins and flush toilets. The bathrooms lead out to a reed enclosed open-air shower with hot and cold running water, powered by LP gas for hot water on demand.

Each secluded tent has its own sundeck, and is set back among the trees. The endless vistas from the large windows and decks across the vast plains, make Lebala one of the finest wilderness camps in Africa.
