Jacana Camp
is a truly water oriented camp and offers mokoro and walking safaris
all year round
Situated about 25 kilometres west of Mombo, outside the Moremi Game
reserve on the Jao flats
Game drives are also on offer year round but night drives are ony
possible from about September to May as water levels restrict this activity
when the flood is in
A really good option for two nights, in combination with two
or more dry camps
Jacana is a pleasantly small and simple camp on the excellent Jao Concession in the western Okavango Delta.
May to October this is primarily a wet camp, offering excellent mokoro and motorboat safari, but limited dry game-viewing. At this time we tend to avoid it except in safaris which include 3 or more camps, for fear of a shortage of animal action.
November to April when water levels are generally low, Jacana is one of only a handful of camps to offer a good range of wet and dry safari and therefore suitable in any camp combination
Situated just outside the Moremi Game Reserve, Jacana Camp is set in an area densely
populated with beautiful red lechwe, sitatunga antelope and Wattled Crane. It is a true
water camp, offering mokoro safaris all year round, as well as game drives when the
floodwaters have receded –generally between October and April.
Big game, such as elephant, lion, leopard and buffalo, is found regularly in the area,
depending on water levels, while birdlife is abundant; enthusiasts can spot Pel’s Fishing
Owl as well as Greater and Lesser Jacanas and a host of other Okavango specials such as
Slaty Egret and Pygmy Goose.
Accommodation is in five Meru-style tents, each raised on a wooden deck with wonderful
views over the lagoon and floodplains. The en-suite bathroom is enclosed but roofless. The
main dining area is on an elevated wooden deck between two enormous sycamore trees,
and surrounded by dense wild date palms. Downstairs, there is a cosy pub and lounge,
with a large viewing deck, and an open area to sit around the fire under the stars.

Game

in the Okavango. Lechwe, Hippo, Reedbuck, Crocodile, Sitagunga

the fan palm fruit is ripe in late July onwards.
