Safari & Adventure Co. represents the roots of Wilderness Safaris’first forays into tented camps in the late 1980s. At that point in our history we secured isolated, private concessions and built rustic camps to service our overland safari itineraries. As the years passed and demand from a growing market of repeat safari goers and an influx of others new to this African travel genre changed, the camps became smarter and more sophisticated. This led us to expand our Premier camp offering and to further develop our Classic camp range, leaving our former Vintage camp brand a forgotten relative.

As a result of increased demand for the ‘back to basics,’original bush experience, we have now resurrected this under a new banner: Safari & Adventure Co.
Under this brand we have focused on the fundamental elements of a traditional safari camp and have been able to ensure that we provide an authentic and sincere safari experience that does not compromise on service or location or wildlife viewing.

The camps are larger than those we have previously operated and the tents smaller than those in the
Classic and Premier categories, but remain comfortable and lively with the same quality of staff and in the same prime locations we have always sought out.

This creates a space where young and old, couples, families, single travellers and groups are equally comfortable, with an emphasis on the vibrant, social element of a safari. Importantly the same
underlying principles of conservation and community engagement and upliftment of Wilderness Safaris remain central to Safari & Adventure Co.

In each camp activities best suited to maximising the experience of the local environment are offered, whether this be game drives, walks, visits to traditional villages or significant local cultural and historical sites. Each lodge site and concession is carefully chosen as the best available in a specific area and wherever possible we have secured private and exclusive areas accessible only to our guests.

Kalahari Plains Camp (opening December 2008) is a tented camp situated in a remote
part of the diverse and productive Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR). Located in
the Kalahari Desert biome in the central part of Botswana, this reserve is the largest
conservation area in this country and at 5 million hectares (12 million acres), one of the
largest in the world.
The camp is beautifully situated on a low sandy ridge fringing a typical Kalahari pan and
will comprise ten Meru-style en-suite tents, including a family unit. Guided game drives
unlock the fascinating wildlife treasures found in this wonderful area.
The landscape and topography consists of flat grasslands and undulating vegetated
dunes teeming with a multitude of antelope species and large predators. This area
is characterised by vast open grassy plains, seasonal pans, wooded acacia islands,
prehistoric scrub-covered dunes and fossil riverbeds.
During the late summer months, after the rains, this area probably offers the best
wildlife viewing in Botswana with vast aggregations of blue wildebeest, springbok and
gemsbok, followed by abundant predators such as wild dog, cheetah, bat-eared fox and
the legendary black-maned Kalahari lions.

Our specially designed tents with pure cotton linen, stylish old metal finishes and refreshing amenities add to the overall atmosphere and guest comfort.
Explorations mostly utilise private concessions and wildlife areas exclusive to guests and in this sense are unrivalled mobile safaris. Our guides are noted for their passion and knowledge of their particular countries and lead each journey from start to fi nish, creating a seamless interpretive experience. A variety of travel modes, such as game drives, walking, mokoros, canoeing, boating and air charters, maximise every opportunity to view diversity of Africa’s flora and fauna.

Each itinerary has been carefully created with the changing seasons, game movements and guest experience in mind

Camps are set up largely in private areas, with some select campsites in national parks, allowing us to make use of a wide variety of fascinating and unique activities and locations. Prime areas and routes combine with competitive rates to ensure the best opportunities to experience southern Africa’s natural and cultural wealth throughout the year

Our Explorations feature frequent scheduled departures, each comprising small groups of up to eight guests, most guaranteed with a minimum of two guests.

All are non-participation with old-style safari comforts and amenities provided on each of the three types of Exploration: Discoverer, Adventurer and Trails

Finally, Wing Safaris are exhilarating luxury camp journeys characterised by air transfers from one camp to another, allowing for an incredible aerial view of the changing ecosystems and habitats below.
