Mahango Game Reserve Caprivi Namibia
a small diverse reserve of grassland, woodland, floodplain,
riverine forests and reed beds.
Location
Mahango is some 30 000 ha and is separated from
the Caprivi Game reserve by the Okavango river.
It lies 12km south of Popa Falls at the far western
end of the Caprivi Game Reserve

Wildlife
The Mahango Game Reserve is particularly known
for its elephant.
Other residents of the reserve are buffalo, lion,
leopard, cheetah, wild dog, sable, roan, the shy sitatunga
and lechwe.
There are also crocodiles and hippos. |
Bird
species
Up to 400 species including
squacco, longtoed plovers, western banded snake
eagles, lesser blue-eared starlings, Dickinson's kestrels,
bateleur, fish eagle, pygmy goose, lesser jacana, purple
banded sunbird,African golden oriole, Schalow's lourie,
white crowned plover, rock pratincole,
emerald cuckoo, yellow throated sandgrouse,
Bohm's spinetail, Pennant winged nightjars and
African finfoot.

Accommodation
There are no accommodation facilities within the reserve.
There are several private lodges in the area.

Facilities
There are 2 game viewing roads – one is a 4 x 4 track
and the other can be negotiated in a 4 x 2 vehicle. |
Visiting
Times
The reserve is open all year round.
The best time for game viewing is during the dry
season (from June to October).
Bird watching is best done during the wetter months
(November to March |
Getting
There
It is only accessible by 4WD vehicles and there
are some minor gravel tracks |
