Livingstone Zambia

together with Victoria Falls Zimbabwe is the adventure capital of southern Africa and an important tourist hub for safaris in southern Africa

 

History

Named after the famous Victorian missionary
explorer, Dr. David Livingstone, the town was
established in 1905.

As a major European settlement, the town was
made the capital of Northern Rhodesia in 1911.

The capital was moved to Lusaka in 1935

The Livingstone Museum
is the country’s biggest and oldest museum,
dating back to the 1930’s.


The Archaeology Gallery, describes human
evolution and cultural development in Zambia
from Stone Age to Iron Age.

The Ethnography and Art Gallery shows
objects relating to the different cultures of
the country including handicrafts, musical instruments.

The History Gallery includes the origins of the
Bantu people, the development of British colonial
rule and the attainment of independence.

It also houses a large collection of David
Livingstone memorabilia.

The natural history section shows various
indigenous animals in their natural habitat.

Churches
Zambia is predominately a Christian country and there are churches of every denomination in the town. Many of them have English services on a Sunday.

Banks
There are branches of Barclays, Standard Chartered Bank and Zanaco, all in the town centre. ATMs available at Barclays, Standard Chartered and Zanaco. For over-the-counter cash withdrawal – Barclays. Banks open Mon-Fri 8.15am-2pm, First and last Sat in month 8.15-11am.

Credit cards
Some shops and restaurants in town accept credit cards. Prices will be in charged in US dollars.

Bureaus De Change
There are many bureaus in town. Do not change money in the street. The bureaus give the same rate as street sellers – if you are offered a better rate on the street, expect trouble.

and old photographs illustrating life in the
pioneer days of the town.

 

Getting There

By air

 

By road

From Zimbabwe :
cross the border at the town of Victoria Falls
over the famous Victoria Falls Bridge,
carry straight on this road for about 11 kilometres.

From Botswana:
cross the border at Kazungula by ferry, and
continue east for about 60kms.

From Lusaka, Livingstone is 470 kms.
Take the southbound Kafue Road out of Lusaka
and just after the Kafue River Bridge, turn right
towards Mazabuka.
This road leads straight to Livingstone.

 

YOUR VEHICLE
Make sure you have reflective tape on your vehicle and that your have third party Zambian insurance. All drivers must have a valid driving licence. Seat belts must be worn. Parking in town is generally safe, but make sure that your car is locked and that valuables are not visible. There have been incidents along the river towards the Falls, so take care when stopping to view the river.
