of northern Botswana

elephant herd
The Walking Safari Experience
The Selinda floodplains are host to a variety of antelope,
zebra, giraffe, cheetah, wild dog, lion and plenty of elephant.
Predator viewing is exceptional including the hippo-killing
lions of Selinda, leopard, wild dog and cheetah.
Overview
Selinda Walking Trails has two trails camps in two contrasting
areas.
Mokoba Camp is located on the fringes of an
enormous open plain, close to the Kwando waterways.
This open savannah area is usually teeming with wildlife of all
shapes and sizes.
Then there is Tshwene Camp which is located to
the west within a more forested area in a completely contrasting
location.
Spending a night at each camp gives guests the most wonderful
walking safari experience.
The adventure begins and ends at the Selinda airstrip with the
optional extension either before or after the trail at one of
Selinda or Zibadianja Camps.
Over the three-night trail, guests walk under the guidance of
an experienced, armed professional guide and a bushman tracker.
With only about 7km walking between camps, the emphasis is on
exploring Africa and its wonders at a pace set by the guests.
A wildlife walk of about 3km is enjoyed each afternoon, returning
before dark to enjoy sundowners around the camp fire. |
Camp
Accommodation
The trails camps, Mokoba and Tshwene,
are semi-permanent and comprise three
twin-bedded mini-Meru style tents on
raised wooden decks with facilities for a
sleep-out option.
En-suite facilities include a hand basin
and flush toilet, whilst a shared twin
hot bucket shower can be enjoyed from
the privacy of the secluded "ablution deck"
with a view of the surrounding floodplains.
Lighting is provided by means of hurricane
lanterns and a battery system and hot water
is provided by means of either a solar- or
gas-powered system depending on weather
conditions.
Luggage is transferred from camp to camp
so guests only carry their cameras and binoculars.
The camp's hostess handles all the camp
chores with our camp staff

Itinerary
Day 1:
Guests are met at the Selinda airstrip and
transferred through to the first camp - either
Mokoba situated on the floodplains in the north
east of the concession, or Tshwene situated
on the Selinda Spillway.
After settling in the afternoon takes the form
of an easy walk in the vicinity of camp with the
armed guide.
This may be only a couple of kilometres in
duration depending on what is encountered
and allows the protocols of walking in a big
game area to be established and for guests
to acclimatise to the environment.
The day winds down around the camp fire
watching hearty meals being prepared on the coals and listening
to the night sounds which may include roars of resident lion prides
or
the 'prrrp' call of African Scops-Owl.
Day 2:
After an early wake-up call and light breakfast, guests head out
on a morning walk exploring the surroundings and in search of
both large mammals and all the other interesting facets of the
environment.
While plains game such as zebra, wildebeest,
giraffe and impala are commonly encountered, the focus of the
walk is also on medical and traditional uses of plants, the rudiments
of tracking, insects and birds.
Large species such as buffalo and elephant
are also frequently encountered and sightings with predators such
as lion are possible.
We return to camp for brunch and enjoy a
midday siesta before a shorter late afternoon walk in the vicinity
of camp.
Our evening meal is often enjoyed around
the fire, with time for reflection before retiring. |
Day
3:
After an early wake-up call and
light breakfast, guests head out on a
morning walk that will take them to their
next camp in a different part of the concession.
This allows exposure to a variety of
habitats and ensures good opportunities
for game viewing depending on season
and also local dynamics.
This is a gentle nature walk and en route
to the next camp we have time for game
viewing and ecological interpretation.
We arrive in time for brunch and the
relaxing midday period is spent settling in
camp and resting.
In the afternoon we enjoy our customary
shorter walk complete with sundowners
and a return to the welcoming camp fire.
Day 4:
After an early wake-up call and light breakfast
we enjoy the flexibility of either a short walk
or a morning game drive en route to
departure from the Selinda airstrip
or an extended stay at either of Zibadianja
or Selinda Camps
